This month is Movember, an annual charity event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for men’s health. For the month of November, men are encouraged to grow mustaches to spark open conversations about men’s health issues, including mental health and suicide prevention. Although the culture around men’s mental health is steadily changing, mental health struggles and therapy still carry stigma that make it challenging for men to seek out help. Education and awareness can go a long way, and online therapy is helping to make professional help more accessible to men.

Online therapy supports men’s mental health in several ways:
- Increased Privacy – Online therapy allows men to speak with a professional while in a familiar setting such as their home. It also eliminates the need to travel to a therapist’s office and answer people’s questions about where they are going. Therapists use HIPPA-compliant platforms to conduct sessions and keep information secure.
- Larger Provider Pool – By removing the need for travel, online therapy enables men to select from a wider pool of therapists. The therapist will need to be licensed in the patient’s state, but men can choose a therapist who has experience treating the specific mental health challenges or other issues with which they need help, without physical distance from their office being a consideration.
- Flexible Scheduling – Prioritizing therapy can be challenging when appointments are scheduled during the work day or at times when patients have other obligations. Online therapy gives men greater flexibility in deciding when to meet with their therapists.
- Supports Those with Physical Disabilities – For men with physical disabilities or mobility issues, online therapy allows them to work with a therapist without having to overcome transportation issues or other barriers.
